Read the job description with two questions in mind: What interests me about this work? Where have I used the skills it calls for?

Look at the responsibilities, required qualifications, and any preferred experience. Check the location and work-arrangement details, too. Use those details to decide whether the opportunity fits what you can bring and what you’re looking for next.

Connect your skills to the role

You may have built relevant skills through a different job, a project, study, volunteering, or military service. Make the connection clear rather than relying on a matching job title.

For each key skill in the posting, think of an example that shows how you’ve used it.

Use the language in the posting when it accurately describes your experience. Give it substance with examples in your own words.

Show what changed because of your work

A list of responsibilities tells us what was on your plate. An example helps us understand your contribution.

Try this simple structure: What you did + how you did it + what happened.

Stay steady when something

A challenging question can take a moment to work through. Pause, reread the instructions, and separate what you know from what you need to work out.

Use only the tools and resources the assessment permits. That includes AI tools, outside help, notes, and reference materials. If the instructions don’t make this clear, ask before using them.

Protect confidential information from previous work or clients. If you’re invited to share an example, use material you have permission to disclose or ask whether you can provide an anonymized version.

If time and the format allow, review your work against the instructions. Check that you’ve answered the required parts, included the right files, and made any links accessible to the intended reviewer.

For a virtual interview, test your meeting link, audio, and camera ahead of time, and check your display name. Charge your device, silence notifications, and choose a quiet space where you can focus. For an in-person interview, review the location, arrival instructions, and travel time, and keep your recruiter's contact details handy.
